The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 mandates every food business operator to obtain an FSSAI license or registration before commencing any food business. The Act also mandates FSSAI number to be displayed on packaged food labels. In the case of establishments such as restaurants, sweet shops, canteens, retail stores, etc., the regulations, mandates the display of 'Food Safety Display Boards' at prominent places at all times.
The order dated 8th June,2021, mandates printing of FSSAI number on invoices and related documents. This was originally planned from 1st October,2021, but considering the representation from various industries association & stakeholders, it has been decided that the new mandate will come into effect from 1st January, 2022.
It is important to note that businesses in this ecosystem should compulsorily print the FASSI registration number on invoices, receipts, cash memos, bills, etc. It's a new requirement alongside adhering to the current need of printing/displaying the number on products/premises.
The new mandates cover all the documents issued by the food operating businesses except the e-way bill and any such documents generated by government systems.

The new change aims at solving various obstacles faced by different consumers in locating and tracking the FSSAI number. It is also believed that it will help regulators to trace the origin of the complaint and attend to it promptly.
